Andreina And Digna "Creating Keywords"

Group one!!

"Industrial Revolution's Transformation"

In Elizabeth Kolbert article, "The Darkening Sea," we can see that since the beginning of the industrial revolution transformation the development of businesses had added 250 billions of CO2 to the environment. However, the absorption of the CO2 today has increase 380 parts per millions.
On the other hand, chemists, of course, may want to question whether if the concentration of CO2 will continue increasing since the recorded change has been the highest amount during the last couple thousands of years.

"Bronze, Marble and Glass"

Since the semester is officially over, projects and reactions are more challenging. For our last project as well as field trip reaction, we had to pretend that we were hired as curators for the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the met as many people call it. Our mission to conserve the job was that we needed to look for three different sections of the museum and explain how they relate to each other, but we also needed to find a specific theme. This was the hardest part because it is easy to look for  different artworks in a gigantic museum such as met, but when it comes to find similar things like their mediums is just a headache in your first day of work. I proposed myself to look for something that could be a little different to what we see everyday when we talk about art. So, I spend a couple of hours trying to find my theme which was bronze, marble and glass in the sections of Greek and Roman Art, Egyptian Art, and Ancient Near Eastern Art.

The themes of my exhibition are bronze, marble, and glass. I choose this three types of medium because my exhibition is based on pieces that were found long time ago and these were the most common mediums during that time. I expect the viewer of my exhibition to find something that when they see it, they do not refer to it as art but as something that they just considered old or simply not art. Actually, the dates that people are going to find in the exhibition are ca. 625-600 B.C or the 1st century B.C., meaning that they are super old. Also none of these pieces will have their main author because the majority of them were acquisitions and others were found. Also when I found them I was not surprised with the time these pieces were supposedly made because that was part of what I had in mind.

The three pieces that I choose were the "Marble Stele (grave marker) of a youth and little girl" that is a tall figure in marble, and there is a woman with a little girl, also on top the of the figure there is like a dog or lion f with wings and a human face. The second piece was the "Marble Statue of a Kouros (youth)" from the Egyptian Art section which shows a young boy naked. Finally, the last piece came from the Ancient Near Eastern Art section of the museum which is the "Marble Sarcophagus with the Triumph of Dionysos and the Season" where there are a lot of naked people and animals. In the other hand, the three pieces that I choose obviously share a similarity in their appearance because they are all naked and two of them have animals. Also they are made with the same medium which is marble. However, I do not think they share the same meaning at all because for instance the second piece is the little boy, and he is totally alone, but the third piece even though they are naked as the second one there are about 30 people and some animals. Moreover, a different similarity that I found among these three pieces are that their authors enjoyed nude sculptures.

In conclusion, I know that my plans to keep my job were a little over the limits, but I think that after my efforts looking through many different section of the  met and finding the same medium for all the pieces, my boss Mr. Richter would be satisfied.  I hope you all enjoy my "Bronze, Marble and Glass exhibition" as I did.

“Chelsea Galleries Reaction”

For this field trip, we had the opportunity to go the Chelsea Galleries. In these galleries we could actually observe the artwork of many different artist, but also you could buy the artwork that were in the galleries. The purpose of this field trip was to look for any pieces that we like/dislike to buy and why. Therefore, I felt like a rich artist walking around the Chelsea Galleries pretending that I was going to spend thousands of dollars.

The two artwork that I liked were actually in the Tania Bonakdar Gallery in the exhibition of Ernesto Neto: Slow iis good.  When I first saw his artwork, it remains me of my country because there are some places that have this kind of stuff.  However, what I really liked about his work was that everything in his exhibition looks so simple but at the same time beautiful, he did not exaggerate like many artist do. Also, all the artwork that I got to see was a very good investment because almost everything in there have like a double function; first, it can be use a decoration like the Sound Way that have little bells on the bottom and while people walk through it, if they touch the sound way, it sounds. And second, people can place it in the playground for their children like The Island Bird which is a humongous artwork that is hanging from the roof and  children but also people can get in it and walk through it, and somehow it looks like a bird with its open wings. So, these two artworks I would definitely put it on display not only because they look beautiful and fun, but also because both of them are very practical.

On the other hand, the other two artwork that I disliked where in different galleries. The first one was in the Gagosian Gallery with the exhibitions of Richard Avedon: Murals & Portraits. When I saw his artwork I was not impressed with it because pictures and portraits are very common in this days, and I do not considered as art because anyone can take a picture and place in a white background. Moreover, I would not invest my money to buy somebody else portrait because I rather prefer to have a picture  of myself or my family than a stranger. So, this is an artwork that I would keep it in the darkness of a storage.  On the contrary, the other artwork was in the Gladstone Gallery that was exhibiting Anisk Kapoor's work.  One of the reason I disliked her artwork was because she only used one medium which was concrete, and when somebody talk to me about art I think in creativity using a variety of material to come up with something different and original.  Also, some of the concrete sculpture shape looked like human feces. I think that if she could use some painting on it, it would look better to me even though one of the characteristics of this sculpture was the natural of the concrete color. Similarly to the pictures and portraits of Avedon, I wouldn't invest any money on this artwork, and both portrait and sculpture will share a room in a storage.

In conclusion, it was super fascinating walking through the Chelsea Galleries because it helped me to know a little bit more about my lovely and noisy city. I enjoyed looking at different excitations because I loved most of the artwork even though there were some that disappointed me as usual. However, you don't need to be rich to take a walk around the galleries where you have the opportunity to know about different artist, and you never know if you going to find your favorite artist exhibition over there. To sum up, after everybody is done observing the galleries, they can also go into the bridge where you can seat and rest from the long walk between the galleries.

“Sculpture Center Reaction”

In this field trip our class was taken to the Sculpture Center that is close to our school. This center is a non-profit organization that has been around since 1928. During this field trip we had to observe the artwork of Bill Bollinger: The Retrospective, where we had to discuss how does the artwork look from its installation, or if it would look better in another place. Therefore, we had to apply what we have learned from the sculpture lecture.

The cyclone fence thrown on the floor was pretty amazing. This piece is affected by its space and architecture because it would not look the same if this cyclone fence was displayed in a wall or in another place because what makes the viewer able to see how it is fold in the middle is simply the place where it's displayed which is the floor. Also, since this piece is very large, it needs a lot of space and the floor was the perfect site-specific location for it. In the other hand, in the way the cyclone fence interact with the others artworks within their surrounding is like the other pieces would feel jealous about the fence  because it is big and takes a lot of space and obviously people would pay more attention to it than to other pieces that cannot be compared with the humongous size of the fence.

The artwork number ten was the wheelbarrow filled with water. I really liked this piece because it reminds me of my country when people were about to construct something, they used the wheelbarrow to carry their supplies. In the other hand, this artwork changed my perception of the space because it was placed in the back of the room where it was an empty space, and I think a bigger piece could be placed back there to catch the viewers attention. In addiction, this artwork wouldn't have the same effects if it was placed in a different location such as the middle of the room since it was difficult to see if there were another elements inside the water.

The second artwork of the temporary annex with is part of the center was the Boston Common. When I first looked at this piece I thought that water was running through the the rubber hoses since they are all connected to the barrels that are fill with water.  This piece is affected by its space because it was placed in a clear spot where we could look inside and around the barrels, and also it was in the ground. Moreover, if this piece was placed in another location such as on top of a table where we would not be able to see how the rubber hoses  are connected to all the barrels, or if it was placed in a dark location we probably would not be able to figure that the barrels were full of water meaning that this artwork would not have the same effect in a different location than the one it was.

In conclusion, the Sculpture Center was a different place from what we are used to visit during our field trips  because this one was based on sculpture and in the way artwork look from the placed they are displayed. Not only the three pieces that I choose, but all these artwork by Bill Bollinger were place in those specif spots for a reason. However, I did not agree with some of the installation of the artwork. To sum up, I think that before we hang a piece on the wall or in any place we should think about its installation and in the way it would look in that location after it is finished.

“Illustrate a Story”

“Illustrate a Story”

The story that I choose is called "At my house, only one person got the mail, and that was my mother."
I found this story interesting because it is a reality that not too many families tolerate homosexuality, and when they find out that their child is homosexual, they are able to do whatever it takes to not let the world now that their child is simply gay/lesbian. I think that parents exaggerate when they try to make  the child suffer because he/she is homosexual. However, what parents do not think  about are the long terms consequences that the child may carry such as severe depression and low self-esteem. I personally believe that parent must love their children under any conditions because we cannot blame nature for its causes and effects. In the other hand, I almost use all the elements mentioned in the story because I felt very inspired when I listened this story. And I would like to show to the world specially parents that there is nothing wrong with being homosexual because we have to take whatever God send us.

“MoMA PS1: The Good, the Bad, and the Misunderstood”

The MoMA PS1 is  and affiliated museum of MoMA. Unlike MoMa, MoMA PS1 only shows the artwork of young artist which creations one day will be displayed in the most famous museums. MoMA PS 1 surprised me because it was a small museum comparing with the others, and also I though that only artwork from famous artist could be displayed in museums, but in this place modern young artist have the opportunity to expose their creations. In the other hand, the purpose of this field trip was to expand our first blog post: "Goog Art vs. Bad Art."

During the visit to the museum I actually like couple of artworks, but what I truly liked was the creation Henry Taylor "It's Like a Jungle."  In this piece of art I appreciate that Taylor used his imagination to make a jungle out empty gallons, baseball balls, stones, and many others materials. I think it is amazing that people have the ability to create fabulous piece of art with material that at some point we found it useless or we just considered as trash. Also, this artwork reminds me when I and was camping in the mountains which looked like a jungle with my friends from the church.

Something that I did not like was the artwork of Lourraine O' Grady.  This young artist enjoys using different kinds of sex activities in his art.  What turns me off about it was that he was using fruits and vegetables to make sex movements which is okay because  we are living the 21th century, but I personally disagree with it because we eat those fruits and vegetables. Even though many people are using this techniques, everything he did was an exaggeration.

An artwork that I did not understand was the Iguana with the croissant. I know it says that people could adopt the iguana, but I think it should be in the Zoo or in a house for homeless animals not in a museum. Besides that, I did not understand  the relationship between the iguana and the croissant and i believe that iguanas do not eat bread. Also the iguana was in his cage while the croissant was thrown in the floor. So, this scene between those two elements were very confusing until the point that I did not understood.

In conclusion, this young artist have the potential to keep up with their artwork because there are many opportunities for them. All of them have the ability to create artworks that many people like, dislike or may find it confusing, but they have the enthusiasms to do it and that's what counts. To sum up, young lazy people should follow this  others young artists or at least find something profitable to do instead of being wasting their time in the streets.
