“Art and Identity: The Museum of Modern Art”

The Museum of Modern Art better known as MoMA, is an spectacular museum where we can see, explore, and admire the creations of different artists. Our art class was taken to the museum to observe the exhibitions of "Cindy Sherman" and "The Contemporary Galleries: 1980-now." It was very fun to walk around between these exhibitions because as open mind viewers we can quickly notice what kind of art an artist uses to express their feelings, or thoughts. The main goal of the class was to describe how the artist are personally, culturally, and historically related to their pieces of art.

First, an artist is personally connected to an artwork when they incorporate something personal in the elaboration of that specific piece of art. The artist Mariko Mori has created the "star Doll" to probably demonstrate how much she likes dolls or perhaps this dolls are somehow connected to her childhood. It is obvious that there is an insightful connections between Mori and the dolls because if you think outside the box and go a bit further than the observations at the museum and do some researches about her, you will find out that she has make many different type of dolls.

Second,  as we know all cultural art, believes, and tradition are related to an individual background and heritage.  Tadanori Yokoo,created a beautiful piece of art by painting something about Japanese culture. In this painting she illustrate the "Japanese Culture of the Post War Year 1945-1995," so when she or another Japonese see this painting will remember what was happening in Japan during that time. Moreover, Yokoo also incorporated the tittle of the painting in it to guide the rest of the viewers that did not know about it since the drawing is too colorful.

Finally, historical events are easy to recognize because it just happened at that time, and it stays in the past.  For instance, if someone wants to represent the Native Americans he just need to take some fabric and feathers and dress like an Indian, and as long as it is not offensive that person is historically representing the Native Americans. So, in this case,  Stephen Armellino created the "Bullet-Resistant Mask". These masks were used by police officers to protect their faces during the 1980's due to the violence wave in that time. Indeed, these masks are a historical symbol because today police officers do not need to wear them no more.

In conclusion, artist use their artwork to represent something related with them, the community or time which could be past, present or future. What I really liked about the Contemporary Galleries was that all those artists are very realistic with their paintings and viewers like me can feel it. In the other hand, people should keep their cultural traditions up like Tadanori Yokoo because it is simply beautiful to teach children about their heritage. After our field trip to MoMA, I have a different a opinion about museums.

"Narrative Digital Collage"

This collage represents the nightmare of a teenager who used to disobey her mother and one night while she was sleeping she had an awful dream. It was sunny outside, and Martha decided to do excersice. Then she started to walk around her neighborhood and  she ended up at the other side of the town by the river. While she was looking her reflection on the water, she fell into the river but fortunately she could reach a branch and stay there until somebody could rescue her. Minutes later, she noticed that there was a gigantic snake underneath her trying to bait her. At that moment Martha was so desperate and nervous that she imagined her dog who was poisoned three years ago trying to kill the snake so that she could safe, but it did not work. Then she begun to hallucinate, and she saw cupid since valentine's day was coming also trying to kill the snake with his arrow, but his attempt to rescue her was unsuccessful. In the other hand, somebody was walking around the river and call the rescue guy to safe Martha from the malevolent snake. When the rescue guy arrived to the scene, he was more than pleased to help her but when he saw the snake he got sock because he was afraid of snakes. So, Martha's opportunities to be rescued from the snake where somehow disappearing. At that point Martha thought that she would be eaten by the snake, but a man just appeared on his canoe. When the man noticed what was going on, he was on his way to rescue Martha but suddenly from nowhere the canoe got on fire, and he had to jump into the water. Finally, after a couple of hours, it was getting dark and Martha truly felt that was her end but when she was about to fall from the branch, her mother woke her up because she was late for school.

Bad Art

Bad art is obviously something that may not look so pretty. I think that those messy drawings where there is not an specific point to look at it is bad art. Even though it could have another significance to the artist, the public may not think the same. Also when people try to steal an  artistic idea from from the others I will definitely say that person is not a good artist although he/she creates the most amazing drawing I will grade it as a bad art because an artist must be original. 

For me, this picture is meaningless because in the way that I see it, it's just shapes with colors.

Good Art

As it names says it, good art is something that must be or look good. I personally believe that no everybody have the ability to create good art for the public but also for themselves. Art is everywhere, even in the kitchen field because  chefs create good art when they decorate their dishes. Furthermore, we notice that a piece of art is good when we first look at it, and it causes an impact on us, and we just want to keep looking at it. For me that's what I consider good art. Also a good piece of art as long as it does not look ridiculous is when the artist creates his/her painting, sculpture, etc. with inner passion because they just want to express their sentiments through art. However, since we live in an opinionated world, we as individuals have different opinions about good art because when something looks good to me it does not necessarily means that it looks good to the others.

This picture may represent that the artist likes animals, but as I just said about the different taste of art, somebody that do not like animals especially dogs will disagree with my point of view of what good art is.
